Light wells

Many basements have existing light wells adjacent to windows/doors.

A light well can be approximately the size of the existing windows/doors, or it can be much larger, if you have the land available.

You may wish to have extra windows or doors created. These can be to increase natural ventilation and day light to the basement. Doors with access steps can also be created.

For habitable basements these doors and windows can meet the requirements of the building regulations for a means of escape in an emergency situation.
